Frequently Asked Questions and a Brief Guide to the UCI Interactive Campus Map

What is the difference between the "Interactive Map" and the "Text Search"?

When Flash E-Solutions first designed the UCI Campus Map, we were concerned with people who may not have Macromedia Flash installed on their computers. We thought that if we went with our original plan of having a solely Flash-based interactive map, we would be preventing many users who do not have Flash from utilizing our site. Thus, we created the text portion of our website. It allows a user to search for a location if they already know the name of it or to search for it by it's campus code. But most importantly, it allows a user without Flash to use our website.

Interactive Flash Map

How do I zoom in or out?

To zoom the map in or out, click on the or icon from the toolbar located at the top of the map. Place the magnifying glass over the area you wish to zoom in on or out of and left click.

Okay, I accidentally selcted the zoom tool, how do I get rid of it?

If, by any chance, you select the zoom tool but did not intend to, simply push down on the space bar to release it.

How do I move the map around (panning)?

To move the map, left click anywhere on the map, hold and move the mouse however which way to reach the location desired.

How do I find a building?

To find a building, simply select the building code listed in alphabetized order from the drop down menu located at the top right hand corner of the map. The map will recenter on the location you select and a large indicator arrow will point out its precise location.

How do I print a copy of the map?

To print the map, simply select the print button located at the top left hand corner of the map. The printer will print the image that is displayed on the page at that time.

How do I reset the map to its orginal state?

To reset the view of the map, simply select the home button located in the menu icon bar at the top of the map.

I clicked on a building on the map, but all I got was a page saying something about there not being a page for the building I selected, what's going on?

This message means that the building you selected has not been entered into the database yet. We apologize for this inconvenience in advance and ask that you be patient with us while we continue to update and make the campus map work to the best of your standards.

What's up with this legend and what are all these icons about?

The icons on the legend can be toggled (turned on/off) to show various locations on the map. The locations the icons point out are: UCI Shuttle Stops, Parking Lots, Parking Permit and Information Booths, OCTA Bus Stops, and Eateries on and near campus.

Note: If you hover your cursor over the eatery icons, their names are displayed on the toolbar on the top of the page.

What does the location reference number mean?

The location reference number is the same thing as the building number. For example, the Main Library's location reference number is 102; hence, the Main Library is also building 102.

When I select a building from the drop down menu, a big red flashy arrow shows up. What's it for and how do I turn this annoying thing off?

The large red indicator arrow is to show the precise location of the building you selected. It is large because it must get your attention and must show up nicely even when you're fully zoomed into the map. Imagine how a small, dinky arrow would look on a zoomed in portion of the map. To turn it off, simply click on the arrow and it will disappear.

Text Search

How do I find a building?

To search for a building in the text search section of the website, simply navigate to the "Text Search" page from the homepage. Select a location from the drop down menu of locations listed in order of building name or building code and click "Find Building". All the information for the location you selected should be shown in the following page.

What does this "Map Grid Location" mean?

On the PDF map of campus you can find on this site as well as any printed map of UCI (such as in the Schedule of Classes or your UCI Planner) there are grid marks to make it easier for you to find a building on the map. The Map Grid Location is the reference for you to find that particular location on any UCI map.

What does "Closest Eatery" and "Closest Parking" mean?

"Closest eatery" and "Closest parking" are pretty straightforward. They are the closest eatery and parking lot located in relation to the building that is currently being viewed. In each "Building Information Page" a map of the closest eatery and closest parking is highlighted.

What do the "next image" and "previous image" buttons do on the "Building Information Page"?

These buttons allows the user to scroll through other pictures of the building that are stored in the database.

Administrator Functions

How do you login?

An administrative user must enter a valid username and password to gain access to the administrator functions.

What functions does the administrator have?

The administrator is allowed to create a new administrative user, delete a current administrative user, add a new location into the database, edit a current location's information, delete a current location's and information, add/edit/delete a parking lot or eatery.

Why can't I get to the administrative user functions?

The administrator functions can only be accessed by administrators with a registered user account. An administrator must also be logged into the system to use any of it's functions.

How many locations can I add into the database?

The administrator can add as many locations as they want. The database that is used with this site is designed to grow as large as is necessary.

What was used to create this website?

We used PHP4 for the scripting language and MySQL for the database for the "Text Search" page. Of course, Macromedia Flash was also incorporated with the interactive map portion and everything was held together with HTML.

Who are Flash E-Solutions?

Flash E-Solutions was a team created by a group of ICS students for a project course offered at the University of California, Irvine. Jeffrey Cheng, Mark Lee, Christopher Lim, Ankit Nayyar, Jennifer Suwanagorn, and Richard Huynh were the members of this group that came up with the design and layout of this website.
